Susan and Doug FAhlgren
Doug and Susan Fahlgren, owners of Fleurish Lavender of Lost Mountain, describe themselves as ambassadors of the Sequim Lavender Experience. Susan moved to Sequim from Bee Cave, TX (near Austin) two years ago; Doug just recently made a permanent move from Billings, MT. Ava, their Schnauzer, is also on hand to extend a friendly welcome to visitors. Susan, in her first year of distilling lavender essential oil, earned a gold Award of Excellence for the Super variety and a silver for the Hidcote variety from the International Lavender Essential Oil Judging of 2019 Oils in November 2019.
“We are a lavender and alpaca agritourism farm, with a brick-and-mortar gift shop (open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day) and an online gift shop during the off-season (Labor Day to Memorial Day Weekend). We are located at 1541 Taylor Cutoff Rd, Sequim, WA 98382, and our website is https://www.fleurishlavender.com/.
“As one of many beautiful lavender farms in the Sequim - Dungeness area, we take part in the Sequim Lavender Experience efforts to promote The Lavender Trail, a map of several area lavender farms and businesses which draw visitors from around the world to Sequim. Our farm's unique features include our Specimen Garden with 86 varieties of lavender, our alpacas which help fertilize the lavender and provide fiber for yarn, the water wheel on the pump house which makes for a great photo spot, and the vintage cottage gift shop housing our handmade lavender products. We plant, tend, harvest, and distill our lavender here on the farm, which culminates in making hand-crafted bath, body, and home products for the gift shop.
“The farm has a long history of which we are the fortunate fifth owners since it became a lavender farm in 1997. We chose the farm as a place to call home; that it is a working farm with a retail shop simply added to the intrigue of 'adventure in retirement'. We have never worked so hard in our lives, but we love it!
“Doug's family almost moved here in the 1980's at the suggestion of one of his father's old Navy buddies from WWII, but Doug, a teenager at that time, revolted and the move never happened. When we were looking for a place to retire, Doug suggested we look at Sequim and, after stumbling upon the farm, I agreed it was the perfect place for us. We laugh and say that Doug's father got him to Sequim in the end.
“Geographically, the location between the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which provides the Rain shadow effect to perfectly sustain the many lush lavender fields and farms, draws many visitors to the area who wish to follow The Lavender Trail to our family farm.
“We love Sequim’s weather. Doug, a former letter carrier for 26 years in Montana, appreciates the moderate temperatures in Sequim.
“Anyone who seeks serenity surrounded by the calming scent of fragrant lavender, the tranquil hum of happy honeybees, the joy of seeing content alpacas graze, and the genuine welcome from our family will enjoy their visit to our farm.”
